BlackVue Dash Cam Buying Checklist: 6 Hidden Costs to Check Before You Approve the Order

This checklist is for the person who signs the purchase order. Maybe that's you as a fleet admin, office manager, or shop owner. I've approved vehicle accessory purchases for our company since 2019—we run 14 trucks and vans, and I track every dollar in a spreadsheet. Dash cams are the thing people ask for most, so I'll use the BlackVue lineup as the main example. The same six checks apply if you're buying one camera for your own car.

Six checks: model, power, installation, the accident scenario, data and warranty, and paperwork. It took me a few expensive mistakes to build this list. Hopefully it saves you the tuition.

Step 1: Match the camera model to the driving situation, not the spec sheet

BlackVue's lineup runs from something like the DR590X-2CH (front and rear full HD) up to the DR970X and DR900X class with 4K UHD front cameras and cloud connectivity. There is no universal “best BlackVue model.” There is only the model that fits how the vehicle is actually used.

I learned that the hard way. In 2023, I approved a batch of premium cloud-enabled cameras for vehicles that parked in a gated lot at night and on customers' driveways during the day. Roughly a fifth of those locations had no usable LTE signal. The cameras were fine—the configuration was wrong. We paid extra for cloud features that couldn't do their job half the time. That was my mistake, not the product's.

Now I ask one question before looking at models: What does the footage need to prove? If the goal is documenting who hit whom at a stoplight, a mid-tier dual-channel unit usually does the job. If the goal is reading a license plate in a dark parking lot at 2 a.m., that's where the higher-end 4K and low-light performance earns its price. If you don't need remote live view, don't buy a data plan.

One more thing we changed: we stopped trusting box claims. Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), product claims have to be truthful and substantiated—but that's the legal minimum, not your real-world test. We now run a short night test on an actual vehicle before we commit to a model.

Step 2: Decide how the camera gets power before you pick the camera

A dash cam is useless when it has no power. Parking mode is where these cameras earn their keep, and parking mode means the camera needs power while the engine is off.

The BlackVue OBD-II power cable is a popular choice for that. It pulls power from the vehicle's diagnostic port and includes a low-voltage cutoff so it won't drain the battery dead. The cable itself is a small cost compared to the camera. The catch is the port.

A car's OBD-II port is not a universal power outlet. On some vehicles, it stays live after shutdown. On others, it switches off after a few minutes. And sometimes the port is already being used by something else.

We hit that exact situation when we ordered 2025 Ford Rangers with the tow hitch package. The aftermarket trailer brake controller we use on those trucks draws power through the OBD-II connector. The dash cam's OBD power cable wanted the same port. Both couldn't live there. For those trucks, we hardwired the cameras with fuse taps and left the OBD port for the brake controller.

So the real instruction here is: before you order an OBD-II power cable, go look at the vehicle. Check whether the port stays live after ignition off. Check whether anything else needs that port. Honestly, I've never found one reliable database that answers the “does it stay live” question for every make and trim—it varies by year and sometimes by option package. Test it on the actual vehicle.

Step 3: Put installation on its own line

Dual-channel dash cam installation quotes in our area ran about $120 to $250 per vehicle in January 2025, depending on whether the shop had to route a rear camera cable through weatherproofing and trim. If you're comparing camera prices between vendors and ignoring installation, you're comparing incomplete numbers.

We paid a shop for the first six installs. Then we bought a used automotive scissor lift for our shop—the kind that raises a car a few feet off the ground. That purchase wasn't justified by dash cams alone, but it made our install time drop from about an hour and a half to 45 minutes once we got the routine down. If you're outfitting two vehicles, a scissor lift is overkill. Pay the shop. If you're outfitting ten or more and you already maintain your own vehicles, the math starts to look different.

Step 4: Walk through the day after the accident, not just the recording feature

Most people buy a dash cam because they're worried about an accident. But very few think through what happens after one.

Here's a question that never shows up on the spec sheet: will insurance cover a car seat after an accident? We dealt with this when one of our vehicles was rear-ended while an employee's child seat was in the back. The short answer is that most auto insurers will cover replacing child seats that were in a vehicle during a crash. But it isn't automatic, and the process varies by policy and state.

A few things worth knowing: NHTSA recommends replacing child safety seats involved in moderate or severe crashes. For minor crashes—where the seat wasn't damaged, the doors near it weren't hit, and no airbags deployed—replacement is generally not required. Some states go further. California, for example, requires insurers to cover the replacement of child passenger restraints after a collision even if damage isn't visible.

What the insurer will ask for is documentation: photos, the police report, proof that the seat was in the vehicle, and usually a receipt or model number for the replacement. Without those, a legitimate claim gets slower and more painful than it should be.

If you manage vehicles that carry kids, call your insurance contact and ask the car seat question now, before you need it. Write down the answer.

And one honest warning about dash cams in general: the footage is evidence, not a shield. We've had footage prove our own driver was at fault. That was uncomfortable, but it stopped us from disputing a valid claim and racking up legal costs over nothing. Cameras are a tool for truth, not a magic “I win” button.

Step 5: Add data plans and warranty terms as recurring costs

Cloud features—live view, motion alerts, remote access—require connectivity. That usually means an LTE data plan or a reliable mobile hotspot. Depending on the provider and usage, budget roughly $10 to $30 per camera per month for active cloud use (prices as of January 2025; verify current rates).

That monthly number changes the total cost picture fast. Twelve vehicles at $20 per month is $2,880 per year before you've bought a single camera. If the vehicles park somewhere with Wi-Fi every night, a cloud subscription might still make sense for alerts. If they don't, you're paying for a feature that sleeps.

Warranty terms also vary by model, region, and seller. Read the actual warranty document instead of assuming “dash cams last forever.” Register the serial number. Keep the invoice. If a $400 camera fails at month 14, the proof of purchase is what gets you a replacement—not a vague memory of when you bought it.

Step 6: Document everything before installation day

This is the step people skip because it's boring. It's also where total cost of ownership quietly falls apart.

A colleague of mine once replaced a failed camera at full retail price because nobody in the company could confirm which vehicle it came from or when it was installed. No serial number, no install date, no proof of warranty. That's an avoidable $400 mistake.

For each vehicle, keep a one-line record: install date, camera model, serial number, firmware version, installer, and warranty end date. If the camera uses a SIM card or cloud subscription, note the carrier and plan. It takes ten minutes per vehicle. It saves hours and dollars later.

Common mistakes I keep seeing

Three mistakes show up again and again, and I've made all of them at least once:

  • Buying hardware before testing it on the actual vehicle. Spec sheets don't tell you how the camera handles a particular windshield angle or whether the OBD port stays powered overnight.
  • Plugging multiple accessories into one OBD-II port. The camera cable and the trailer brake controller cannot both win that fight. Plan the port allocation before you order parts.
  • Expecting the camera or the insurer to sort everything out without documentation. A camera records. An insurance policy pays according to its terms. Neither replaces the boring job of writing things down.

That's the whole checklist. It's not glamorous, and none of it shows up in the product photos. But it's the difference between a vehicle tech upgrade that saves money and one that quietly bleeds it.
