My $35 code reader gave me one useful sentence: no engine codes. That was it. It couldn't talk to the ABS module. It couldn't check the transmission. It didn't even acknowledge that the power steering existed.
That was the moment I stopped buying tools based on the number at the bottom of the price tag.

Per FTC guidance (ftc.gov), companies are supposed to back up the claims they make. That's one reason I look for specific wording like 'compatible with most OBD2 vehicles from year X onward' instead of 'works on everything ever made.' The honest product descriptions are usually the honest tools.
Everything I'd read before this said affordable Bluetooth scanners were only good for engine codes. In practice, for my specific use case, the BD500 did far more than the old reader. Your experience may be different. This is one mechanic's story, not a universal guarantee.
The cheapest price is not the lowest total cost. The $35 reader I started with cost more than the Ancel BD500 that replaced it. The BD500 wasn't cheap. It was smarter.
