Why a checklist instead of just another review
I coordinate vehicle electronics for a regional grocery distributor. In plain English: I pick the dash cams for our delivery vans, work with our shop techs on installs, and deal with the aftermath when footage gets pulled for an incident. In six years, I've installed or supervised about 220 dash cams.
That experience pushed me toward an unpopular opinion: the camera matters less than the plan around it. A dash cam is one tool in a setup that should also handle a dead battery, a confusing check-engine light, and a wasp in the cab.
So this article is the five-step checklist I run on every vehicle, plus my short BlackVue DR590X-2CH Full HD dashcam review, because that's the unit I've speced most over the past two years.
Step 1: Cover the front and the rear. 'Front-only' is half a solution
Look up BlackVue DR590X-2CH Full HD dashcam reviews and most results talk about video quality and the mobile app. Those are fine topics, but they're not why I chose it. I chose it because it records the front and the rear, both in 1080p, onto one microSD card. That sounds like a small detail until you need it.
Here's the story that stopped me from recommending single-channel cameras. In March 2024, one of our drivers had her side mirror torn off in a store parking lot. The other driver left. Without rear footage, we would have had a partial plate from one witness and a repair bill with no one to send it to. The rear camera settled the claim in four days.
The short DR590X-2CH review
The DR590X-2CH is BlackVue's Full HD 2-channel setup. The front camera body is compact, and the rear cam is small enough to mount without drawing attention. What makes it work for us:
- Built-in Wi-Fi, so footage can be pulled straight to a phone at the roadside, no laptop needed.
- Built-in GPS for speed and location context.
- A capacitor-based power design instead of a lithium battery inside the camera.
That last point matters more than people think. Heat is what kills in-car electronics over time, and a lithium cell inside a dash cam sits on a windshield that can get brutal in summer. Capacitors handle heat far better, and I've seen fewer heat-related failures since we standardized on this design.
Is the DR590X-2CH perfect? No. It is Full HD, not 4K. If your goal is reading a license plate on a dark highway at 3 a.m., step up to BlackVue's 4K line. For daytime incidents, parking-lot bumps, and insurance claims, 1080p from both cameras has been our sweet spot.
If you wire it for parking mode, use a BlackVue hardwiring kit or OBD-II power cable with low-voltage cutoff. I've watched drivers kill a vehicle battery because the dash cam was connected to a circuit that never turns off. Parking mode is supposed to protect you, not leave you stranded.
Step 2: Put a car jump starter battery in every vehicle
The starting device I spec for our vans is a car jump starter battery, not jumper cables. Cables need a second vehicle and a second person. A jump box needs nobody.
The catch is sizing. Match the unit to the largest engine in your fleet. A compact box that starts a sedan nicely will not crank a cold V8 delivery van. When in doubt, get more peak amps. The extra capacity is cheap insurance.
And test the units monthly instead of just charging them. In December 2024, we pulled every jump box out of our fleet and four would not hold enough charge to start anything. They had sat in vans through the fall, slowly draining. Now 'check the jump box' is a line on the monthly inspection sheet. It's a five-minute task that prevents a very cold phone call in January.
Step 3: Keep an OBD2 scanner within reach
A check-engine light usually triggers one of two reactions: ignore it, or panic and call a tow truck. Both are wrong more often than not, and an OBD2 scanner fixes that.
Since the 1996 model year, every car and light truck sold in the U.S. has an OBD-II port under the dash. You don't need a $2,000 diagnostic machine to find out whether that light means a loose gas cap or a real mechanical problem.
The Carista OBD2 scanner is the one that lives in my own vehicle. It's a small Bluetooth dongle that pairs with a phone app, reads and clears codes, and shows live sensor data. For a fleet, it means a driver calls us with a code instead of a guess. For an individual, it means knowing whether to drive home or call a tow.
Example: a driver called from the interstate with a flashing check-engine light, clearly nervous. The code was P0442, an evaporative emissions leak. He'd left the gas cap loose at a fuel stop thirty miles earlier. He pulled off, tightened the cap, and finished his route. No tow truck, no shop visit.
Read the code. Report the code. Then let a mechanic decide. A scanner is a decision tool, not a magic wand.
One rule, though: clearing a code does not fix the underlying problem. Use the scanner to decide urgency, not to silence the warning light.
Step 4: The weird emergency. Can glass cleaner kill wasps?
In July 2024, a driver called dispatch at 9:15 a.m. sounding genuinely rattled. A yellow jacket had flown in his window and was crawling on the inside of the windshield. That sounds minor, but a wasp in the cab can cause a sudden swerve, and a sudden swerve is how a nuisance becomes an accident.
So, can glass cleaner kill wasps? In a pinch, yes. Ammonia-based glass cleaner will drop a wasp or hornet fairly quickly when nothing else is available. It's messy, it's not a pest control strategy, and the cab needs airing out afterward, but it does end the immediate problem.
The safety part: pull over first. Don't spray anything toward the windshield while moving. Glass cleaner leaves a film and can damage some window tint. Aim at the insect, then wipe. If you run rural routes or anyone has an allergy, keep a dedicated wasp spray in the kit. For a known allergy, skip the spray entirely: get the person out and call for medical help.
Step 5: Run a five-minute monthly check
Set a monthly reminder, or this quietly never happens. Our shop runs the same pass on the first of every month:
- Start the dash cam, confirm it's recording, clean the lens, and reformat the microSD card in-camera.
- Verify the jump starter battery holds a charge.
- Confirm the OBD2 scanner is still where it belongs. It's small and tends to get borrowed.
- Check any spray bottles in the cab for leaks or swelling, especially in summer.
What still goes wrong
I'll end with the mistakes that create the most avoidable calls in our fleet.
Bad camera placement. The best camera in the world captures nothing useful if it points at the sky or a bumper. Spend ten minutes aligning both cameras and checking the live view on your phone before you call the install done.
Using the wrong memory card. Dash cams write constantly. A card designed for a still camera can corrupt within months. Use a high-endurance card designed for continuous recording, and format it in the camera on your monthly check.
Not testing gear before you need it. A dash cam that stopped recording two weeks ago is just a plastic brick in a crash. A jump box with a dead charge is a paperweight. The monthly check exists because emergencies don't announce themselves.
That's the checklist. It isn't glamorous, and none of it is complicated. But when something happens on the road, the difference between an annoying hour and a genuinely bad week is usually one of these five items. That's why I set up every vehicle this way.
