Here's the thing: hitch racks live in the dirtiest zone of the vehicle. The rear of a car is a low-pressure pocket that collects dust, sand, tire debris, and road grime. For context, a human hair is about 3.0 to 3.5 mils thick. The clearcoat on that Subaru was about half the diameter of a single hair. And in the areas where the rack had been rubbing, it was already closer to 1.5 mils.
Even a careful machine polish removes 0.2 to 0.4 mils of clearcoat. That material doesn't grow back. Do that twice on a panel that has already been worn by road grit, and you're approaching the point where the next correction burns through into the color coat. Paint correction is a subtractive process. It should never be your first option on a vehicle you plan to keep.
The price of waiting
There is a narrow window where paint damage is cheap to fix. If a scratch stays within the clearcoat, a skilled polisher can level it and restore gloss. But once abrasion reaches the color coat, polishing won't help. You're looking at a repaint, and a panel that has been repainted never behaves exactly like the factory finish.
Clearcoat damage also doesn't stay still. Water, road salt, and wash chemicals find the microscopic cracks and lift the coating from the edges. The price of waiting wasn't just money. That night, the owner lost options. We couldn't do a multi-stage correction and a ceramic coating that needed to cure before a rack was remounted. But when you show up at 4:45 p.m. the night before a trip, compromise is what's left.
The fix doesn't start with a polisher
In our shop, that conversation changed the job. Instead of rushing into a full paint correction, we did this:
- Decontaminated the paint. We sprayed an iron-removing product on the rear section, used a fine clay mitt, and washed away bonded rail dust, brake dust, and trail grit. Polishing over contamination pushes it deeper into the clearcoat, so this step is not optional.
